Cover Letter or No Cover Letter?

Good Morning, ITMC.

I hope you all enjoyed your first week of November. Wow, the festive spirit is already in the air - Starbucks has their Eggnog Lattes available ALREADY!

There has been a lot of song and dance of late about cover letters and their necessity. So I was hoping to get some feedback from all IT job seekers out there about their thoughts on the use of writing cover letters.

If you do write cover letters,

  • Do you refer to key points in your resume?

  • Do you send a customized letter and a generic resume?

  • How long do you spend writing a cover letter?

  • How do you measure the letters success?

  • Do you apply differently to direct positions as you would to an agency?

I am interested to know what has, and hasn't worked for you in the past.

Recruiters, what has your experience been with cover letters? Do you think they are an effective supplement to a resume? Or are the obsolete?

Would love to hear your comments!

Happy Sunday,

Laura
